Ludhiana: A man hailing from Pakhowal Road stabbed his wife to death at Abbotsford in Canada’s British Columbia, where he had gone to meet her and their daughter.
The accused, Jagpreet Singh, has been charged by Canadian police with second-degree murder in relation to fatal stabbing and was arrested from the crime scene, said the father of the victim, who was identified as Balwinder Kaur, 41.
In a statement, Canada’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said that the Abbotsford police department were called to a home at the 3400 Block, Wagner Drive, around 10:50 pm (Pacific Time) on Friday. According to the investigators responding to the call of an assault in progress, they found Balwinder Kaur suffering from life-threatening stab wounds to which she succumbed to in a hospital. Her father Himmat Singh said Balwinder married the accused in 2000 and ever since, her in-laws had been harassing her for dowry.
Her cousin Jagpal Singh said Balwinder’s daughter had moved to Canada in 2020 for higher studies. He claimed that during this time, she fell sick and Balwinder went there to tend her daughter. As per Jagpal, Balwinder later managed to secure the work permit there. He alleged that the accused used to call her repeatedly and mount pressure on her to facilitate his visit to Canada. According to the victim’s cousin, the accused didn’t get the visa initially and when he applied for the second time, he managed to get one-month permission. “However, his visa got expired. Then he again applied and got a three-month visa,” he added.
Himmat said that they had to convince Balwinder’s daughter to call her father to Canada. “Jagpreet went there on March 11 and within a couple of days, he stabbed my daughter to death. He even recorded the entire crime.”
