JAIPUR: Complications of Covid-19 continue to haunt people. A patient, who is a US citizen of Indian origin, got infected with Covid and lost all her four limbs in the USA. Covid caused necrosis, which further resulted in amputation of limbs (legs, hands, and fingers). However, she finally received artificial legs at a private hospital in Jaipur.
The 52-year-old patient, who lives in New Jersey, got infected with Covid in 2020 and lost all four limbs in the USA.She is a quadruple amputee having lost one hand below elbow, fingers of the other hand and below knee amputation of one foot and all fingers of other foot.
Amputation due to necrosis as an impact of Covid has been substantial, but she is a rare case of necrosis, a post Covid complication in which all her limbs were badly affected and needed amputation.
“After getting infected with Covid, a lot of patients developed necrosis. It happens because of increasing blood sugar levels due to excessive steroid consumption as treatment. When sugar level goes up, blood supply in limbs gets affected and nutrition does not reach the affected parts. In her case, nutrition did not reach her legs and hands causing her tissues to die,” said Dr Rajiv Agrawal, clinical director (Prosthetics & Orthotics), at a private artificial limb clinic in Jaipur.
The doctors diagnosed her with necrosis, a condition which cannot be reversed, and she needed to get her affected parts amputated as the tissues of affected parts were dead and need to be removed. The patient originally belongs to Gujarat and she will return to Jaipur next year to get artificial hands. At Sawai Man Singh (SMS) hospital too, patients with A vascular necrosis of the femoral head are coming for treatment. A vascular necrosis of the femoral head is a type of osteonecrosis due to disruption of blood supply to the proximal femur which is also a post-Covid complication.
“Patients who have taken excessive steroid as treatment for Covid-19 have developed avascular necrosis and many pof them have underwent knee replacement at the hospital,” said Dr DS Meena, senior professor (orthopedics), SMS hospital.
