An Indian national in the US has been re-arrested by law enforcement officials after he was convicted of sex crimes against a minor in Maryland state, authorities said.
The 32-year-old man, whose identity remains undisclosed, was apprehended on March 20 in proximity to his residence in Ellicott City. Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Baltimore, under the purview of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), executed the arrest, as announced on Thursday.
Matthew Elliston, the acting field office director for Baltimore’s ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations, emphasized the gravity of the situation, saying, “This predator’s presence in our area constituted a significant threat to the children of our Maryland neighbourhoods. We cannot allow non-citizen sex offenders to roam the streets of our community. ERO Baltimore will continue to prioritize public safety by arresting the most egregious noncitizen offenders.”
While refraining from divulging the individual’s name, ERO Baltimore disclosed that the Indian national entered the US on December 12, 2019, at Dulles International Airport in Dulles, Virginia, as a nonimmigrant visitor.
US Customs and Border Protection intercepted him on November 14, 2021, at John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens, New York, as he endeavored to board a Qatar Airlines flight bound for Doha, Qatar. Subsequently, it was revealed that he was subject to an active warrant issued by Maryland’s Montgomery County Police Department for sexual abuse of a minor and third-degree sex offenses.
The individual was granted parole by CBP until November 12, 2022, and transferred to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department for extradition to Maryland. Concurrently, US Customs and Border Protection lodged an immigration detainer against the Indian national with the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Brooklyn, New York.
Arrested by the Montgomery County Police Department on November 18, 2021, he faced charges of sexual abuse of a minor and four counts of third-degree sex offenses. Subsequently, the Howard County Police Department apprehended him on February 15, 2022, charging him with two counts of sexual abuse of a minor and two counts of third-degree sex offenses.
Despite the immigration detainer lodged against him by ERO Baltimore, the Howard County Detention Center declined to honor it, resulting in his release from custody on March 20. However, deportation officers from ERO Baltimore’s Criminal Apprehension Program swiftly arrested him in Ellicott City on the same day.
A Department of Justice immigration judge in Baltimore ruled in favor of a Motion for Stipulated Removal Order and Waiver of Hearing, mandating his removal to India.
